Here you will also find our relevant book store and a chat room and social network dedicated to non-Hodgkin lymphoma and related topics. Our book store consists of books about non-Hodgkin lymphoma and cancer survival. Our chat room and social network is designed for non-Hodgkin lymphoma patients, families, friends, and clinicians. Our chat room and social network allows for an unlimited number of users and all we ask is that the conversations stay within the realm of non-Hodgkin lymphoma and related topics.
News sources are selected based on what information would be beneficial to the non-Hodgkin lymphoma patient, patient’s family, and oncologist. This is a news journal and it’s purpose is to provide current breakthroughs in terms of the biological or medical understanding of non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
This news journal is also about hope. The power of hope in healing and eliminating non-Hodgkin lymphoma is essential. On a personal note, my wife has had non-Hodgkin lymphoma now for thirteen years. According to doctors she should not be here today. She is currently living a full and productive life following a stem cell transplant a year and a half ago. Her stem cell transplant and subsequent new immune system, we hope will result in a complete abatement of her cancer. My wife’s stem cell transplant is one of the many options available for the non-Hodgkin lymphoma patient.
Breakthroughs in research on non-Hodgkin lymphoma are occurring frequently. The prudent non-Hodgkin lymphoma patient and family should keep up with the current understanding of treatments and cutting edge technologies. In many cases, the patient may even know more then the oncologist simply because the patient can concentrate on just his or her cancer, while the oncologists must deal with many types of cancer. Hence the need for this non-Hodgkin lymphoma news journal.
I initially put this journal together as a means to provide my wife and myself information on the latest cutting edge technologies for the treatment of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. I later decided, why not make it public, in order to provide other patients and families information on what I found. The news presented here comes from RSS feeds and will update automatically when new articles are available from the source. Book mark this site and view it daily to know about the most cutting edge treatment and research results about non-Hodgkin lymphoma
The Internet can be a powerful tool for the dissemination of information. For the non-Hodgkin lymphoma patient, living in the age of information technology brings benefits for knowledge growth which was unheard of fifteen years ago. Knowledge brings about understanding of cutting edge treatments. Most importantly, understanding creates hope for the non-Hodgkin lymphoma patient.
Here you also find a list of risk factors for the development of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, as well as statistics about this lymphoma cancer. Refer to the left navigation bar for these pages. We have also included some interesting and highly beneficial videos about non-Hodgkin lymphoma which includes stories of hope and inspiration. The following is our current related article section, current videos, followed by the most current news about non-Hodgkin lymphoma. If the information presented here is helpful to the non-Hodgkins lymphoma patient, family and oncologist, then we have met our objective.

PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania, and JERUSALEM, Israel -- The University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute (UPCI) and the Gamida Cell - Teva Joint Venture announced today that the Institute has joined an elite group of cancer centers in Europe, the United States and Israel that are now enrolling patients to participate in the ExCell research study. The phase III study is assessing the safety and efficacy of StemEx(R), an investigational product derived from stem cells, as an alternative treatment to bone marrow transplants for hematological malignancies, including leukemia and lymphoma. StemEx is a graft of expanded stem/progenitor cells taken from a single unit of umbilical cord blood and then transplanted in combination with non-...
Individuals Who Apply Pesticides Are Found To Have Double The Risk Of Blood Disorder
WASHINGTON -- A study involving 678 individuals who apply pesticides, culled from a U.S. Agricultural Health Study of over 50,000 farmers, recently found that exposure to certain pesticides doubles one's risk of developing an abnormal blood condition called MGUS (monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance) compared with individuals in the general population. The disorder, characterized by an abnormal level of a plasma protein, requires lifelong monitoring as it is a pre-cancerous condition that can lead to multiple myeloma, a painful cancer of the plasma cells in the bone marrow. The study will appear in the June 18 issue of Blood, the official journal of the American Society of Hematology. "Previously, inconclu...
LSU Health Sciences Center Research Finds Single Gene Controls Growth Of Some Cancers
NEW ORLEANS -- Research led by Ashok Aiyar, PhD, Associate Professor of Microbiology at LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans, showing that a single gene can control growth in cancers related to the Epstein-Barr virus and that existing therapeutics can inactivate it, will be published in the June 12, 2009 online issue of PLoS Pathogens. The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is closely associated with many human cancers such as Burkitt's lymphoma, Hodgkin's lymphoma, AIDS-related lymphomas, post-transplant lymphoproliferative disease, cancers of the nose and throat, and stomach cancer. In many of these malignancies, proteins made by EBV are necessary for tumor cells to grow indiscriminately. This is especially true of AIDS-relat...
ChemGenex's Omacetaxine May Provide First Viable Treatment Option For Highly Resistant Form Of CML
MELBOURNE, Australia, and MENLO PARK, California -- ChemGenex Pharmaceuticals Limited (ChemGenex) announced that the latest data from its pivotal study of omacetaxine in patients with T315I-positive chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) was the subject of an oral presentation and discussion today at the 2009 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting in Orlando, Florida. The open label Phase 2/3 study (CGX-635-CML-202) investigated the use of omacetaxine, administered subcutaneously in CML patients who had failed imatinib and who have the highly drug resistant T315I kinase domain mutation. Dana-Farber Cancer Institute Presents Results Of Glycomimetics Lead Drug Candidate In Models Of Multiple Myeloma At American Society Of Clinical Oncology Annual Meeting
GlycoMimetics, Inc., a clinical-stage biotechnology company developing a new class of small molecule, glycobiology-based therapies for a broad range of indications announced that data from in vitro and in vivo preclinical studies of GMI-1070 in models of multiple myeloma will be presented at the upcoming annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). The data suggest that selectin expression plays a key role in blood cancer cell homing to bone marrow, and that GlycoMimetics lead drug candidate pan-selectin inhibitor GMI-1070 reduces the rate at which multiple myeloma cells extravasate from the bloodstream, thereby inhibiting homing to the bone marrow. The new data suggests that there may be a basis for testing...
Afinitor Phase II Data Show Positive Results For Patients With Multiple Types Of Lymphoma, Leading To Phase III Trial
EAST HANOVER, N.J. -- New data show that Afinitor(R) (everolimus) tablets significantly shrunk tumors in 33% of patients with relapsed non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) and Hodgkin's disease(1). Based on results from this study and other early-stage research, Novartis has initiated a Phase III trial in the most common NHL, diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and Hodgkin's disease, also known as Hodgkin's lymphoma, refer to a variety of cancers affecting the immune system, such as DLBCL, mantle cell lymphoma and follicular lymphoma(2). Up to 60% of patients with aggressive types of NHL, including DLBCL, may be cured with appropriate therapy(3). However, NHL patients have a high risk of relapse after in...

Popular Cancer Drug Linked To Often Fatal Brain Virus
The 57-year-old lawyer in New York had handily completed the New York Times' Saturday crossword puzzle the hardest of the week for years. But one Saturday morning, suddenly he couldn't retrieve the words to fill in the squares. In Chicago, an 83-year-old woman began parroting the same phrases over and over. When her doctor asked her how she was, she replied, "I am fine. I am fine. I am fine." The symptoms of the New York lawyer and the Chicago woman could have been mistaken for early dementia. But an MRI brain scan and biopsy revealed something surprising. It looked like their brains had been eaten away. A brain biopsy and a spinal tap confirmed the diagnosis of a swiftly moving and often fatal viral brain infection called progressi...

The findings from EXPLORE will be presented tomorrow at the 45th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). The EXPLORE trial was sponsored by Alexion P...
Two Targeted Therapies Likely Better Than One In Patients With Aggressive Lymphoma, Researchers Say
When combined with a cocktail of chemotherapy drugs, two monoclonal antibodies, instead of one, appear to offer superior results in patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, according to Mayo Clinic researchers working with the North Central Cancer Treatment Group (NCCTG). At the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), researchers say that adding the targeted therapy epratuzumab to a regimen known as R-CHOP resulted in an overall 12-month survival of 88 percent in 78 patients. While they call that a very good outcome, the researchers were especially encouraged because the survival rate was 85 percent in patients with high-risk disease. "These results are very good and very promising, and hopefully will b...
New Therapies To Treat Breast, Lymph Cancer: Studies
New therapies developed following groundbreaking clinical trials appear to effectively target breast cancer and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, according to research unveiled Sunday at a major cancer conference. The first therapy targeting the capacity of cancer cells to repair themselves shows promise in treating breast cancer, according to results of two small clinical trials. The new agent, especially adept at targeting cancers that are most difficult to cure, neutralizes an enzyme called PARP (poly-ADP-ribose-polymerase) and prevents it from playing its usual role in repairing the DNA of damaged cells. Like healthy cells, cancerous cells employ PARP to regenerate themselves after they have been damaged by chemo-therapy treatments. T...
